Normand House Mural, Southampton Hospital

I was invited to brighten the waiting area in the Child Psychology department at Southampton General Hospital. Contemplating the emotions patients and carers might experience in this environment, I approached the design with the intention to spark curiosity, inspire reflection, and ease the weight of waiting.

Some patients face long waits, while others return repeatedly, so the mural provides a rich variety of detail, offering layers to explore and questions to ponder. Notably, the design embraces the complex emotions patients may hold, providing a gentle space for contemplation before their appointment.

The mural was painted using carefully chosen colours from the Children’s Hospital palette, ensuring harmony with the surroundings and a sense of calm continuity.
